Unconventional Passive House - Pushing the Boundaries of Performance in Service of Architecture

Wednesday, June 13, 2018
5:30-8:00 pm

Alnoba is a 13,684 square foot sustainable retreat center in New England that combines traditional timber-frame design and construction with a high-performance building shell, and includes event, educational and exhibition spaces.  It is the first of its kind Passive House certified building.

We will gather on a beautiful summer evening to hear from project architect, Matthew O'Malia AIA, GO Logic, Inc., Belfast, ME.   Matthew's presentation will explore the development of GO Logic’s approach to certifying a variety of Passive House project types, and how this was applied to solve the unique challenges of certifying Alnoba. Matthew will describe how the Passive House approach can accommodate a variety of occupancies, large areas of glazing, a full commercial kitchen and an open masonry fire place.  While not a conventional passive house building, this project demonstrates that through careful detailing and planning, a wide range of functions and architectural expressions are possible, while still archiving the rigorous demands of the Passive House standard.

The evening includes a tour of the facilities, a buffet dinner and a cash bar.

On this evening we will also recognize the New Hampshire Architecture Foundation 2018 Scholarship winners.
