Emerging Professionals and IDP

The Intern Development Program (IDP) is administered through National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). Completion of the program is required by the NH Joint Board of Licensure and Certification prior to taking any portion of the Architect Registration Exam (ARE). Through the IDP system, interns receive advice and guidance from practitioners. The Emerging Professionals Companion (EPC), a supplementary education program, provides for a variety of learning resources designed to enrich his or her training.

Emerging Professionals Companion

What is the Emerging Professionals Companion (EPC)? The AIA, together with NCARB, has a web based professional development resource (EPC), consisting of learning activities related to the IDP training areas. The EPC also provides other resources that can help clarify issues, address problems and answer questions. You can earn one elective training unit for each completed learning activity.

Intern Development Program

In New Hampshire there are three ways in which one may become licensed. The most common process is to graduate from and NAAB Accredited University or College and then proceed through the Intern Development Program administered through NCARB. If you have any questions on the process of becoming licensed in NH, contact Louise Lavertu at llavertu@nhsa.state.nh.us or Thomas A. House, AIA at idp@aianh.org.

The AIANH Intern Development and Coordination Committee with assistance from the AIA will be providing seminars geared toward the development of the Emerging Professionals. The goal of these seminars is to de-mystify a process that can appear complicated to many.

Getting Started

The best way find out all about the IDP and to get started is to access the NCARB website, which is a wealth of information: Getting Started with IDP.

An e-mail account has also been established to address New Hampshire Emerging Professionals' questions about the licensing process. The process can be very complicated and confusing which often discourages the Emerging Professional from beginning their licensure process. This tool is intended to assist the Emerging Professional navigate the process more easily through contacting the NH State IDP Coordinator directly and receiving a response in a timely manner. If you have any questions about IDP or the activities of the IDCC please do not hesitate to contact Thomas A. House, AIA, NCARB at idp@aianh.org

Mentoring

An IDP Mentor is a licensed architect who meets with IDP participants at a minimum of once every four months to review training progress and to sign a training unit report to verify quarterly reviews. An IDP Mentor can be your supervisor and/or someone who works in your firm, though neither is recommended. The AIANH Mentoring Program can help Emerging Professionals find mentors.
