Integrated Design/Integrated Development V:
Stepping Up to the 2030 Challenge
Plymouth State University, July 17-18

The 2008 Conference, IDID V: Sustainable Design: From Leed to Living Buildings, was focused on finding ways at the state, community, and site scales to "Step Up to the 2030 Challenge" of carbon neutral buildings, to help reduce carbon dioxide levels to below 350 ppm (a target set by climate scientists as the "red line" for humans).

Reviews by attendees:

I left the event with a different take on climate change than before. I see that it is containable and that we can make a difference as individuals, without waiting for Washington to tell us how to do it.
— Chris Saltmarsh, Secondwind Water Systems

Excellent conference! Very much enjoyed the thoughtful cohesiveness of the designed (integrated) curriculum....Leith Sharp’s presentation was fabulous... Fascinating, almost relentlessly packed with one relevant insight on another.... Food was exceptional – seats comfortable – exceptionally planned event – and Kate’s role as moderator I thought brilliant and brilliantly executed. The 350/59%/2030 message I am quite sure is now deeply imbedded and understood on several layers for all. Congratulations and Thank you!
— Margaret Dillon, S.E.E.D.S.

I have been to 3 out of 5. Each one gets better than the last – this was really tops. The 2030 challenge theme was so timely and on target and presenters were first class, with Ed Mazria sounding the call to arms and many of the others in support with examples from the trenches. ...I am a big fan of the size of the event – not so big to require concurrent sessions, but large enough to draw a critical mass of interested professionals. At the end of two days we’ve all heard the same material and can share war stories of our own on the issues at hand. What’s next? —Stu White AIA, Banwell Architects

Just a note to express my appreciation for all your good work in connection with the IDID conference. I found it excellent, inspiring, and highly informative.
— Luigi Bartolemo AIA, Cormack Construction

Please extend my thanks and congratulations to the organizers and speakers at IDID for a very impressive conference. I have never attended a conference with higher quality presentations.
—  Peter L. Bonneau, Project Manager, MacMillin

I wasn’t sure what IDID was all about. I was pleased to learn about the varied presentations on the schedule. So many different voices heard, so many learning experiences shared. I found the conference energizing, informative, and extremely well managed. Thank you to you and your whole team for a great seminar.
 —Anne Dodd, Harvey Const. Corp.

Over the top with good information! I was impressed with it. Perfect venue (PSU). The best conference so far. I was very impressed with the quality of the presentations. Time well spent for me!
— Tom Samyn AIA, Samyn D’Elia Architects

This is the 3rd IDID conference I have had the pleasure of attending. It is the one conference I hope to catch every year from here on out. Of all the seminars & conferences I have attended over the years.....this has been the best. Every year it seems to be more and more focused in a positive way to help empower us to change the built environment. Keep up the great work.
—Kelly Gale AIA, Banwell Architects

It was, perhaps, the best IDID yet – very consistent in the substantive, relevant content of the presenters. It offered tangible reinforcement for many of my own beliefs and inspired me to step up the push for sustainable design.
— Michael Munson AIA

I was only able to attend Thursday's events due to last-minute conflicts. The information presented and the energetic, practical call to action were appropriate and relevant. I've already presented the ideas and information to others and am enthused about solutions to large-scale problems. As more information and the video from the AIA 150 initiative becomes available, that will be another great resource as well. Please keep up the good work; I'll do my best as well.
—Alexander Loth, Gilbane

Highlights of the conference: Ed Mazria and Leith Sharp. In general the conference continues on an upward trajectory, but the vibe remains as friendly and convivial as ever. PSU was an excellent choice of site.
—Robert Brooks, Halvorson Design Partnership

My sense of the urgency to be more integrated in my design practice was clearly elevated by the conference. It was informative and inspirational. The subject matter was well thought out to be both helpful and chalenging. My design envelope of matters to consider was widened.
—Harry Seidel, Alae Design

I enjoyed the event, it was informative and well run. Each of the presenters offered views that make me more aware of different methods of construction and a critical thinking that's different than the normal every day way we work.
—Ed Friedman, Trumbull-Nelson Construction
