Eco-Village Housing Prototype

Architect // Sheldon Pennoyer Architects

Description

Set in the hills of Vermont, on a 500-acre retreat center, these three prototype housing units were developed as an affordable model for guest accommodation. The buildings serve both the campus and the community, as the retreat center is home to recreational trails, meditation spaces, and event venues. Clustering the units at the heart of the campus reduced the need for vehicle access and consolidated utility costs. The buildings were sited intentionally to preserve privacy from one another while also curating a community of spaces. The gable end walls extend forward, providing both shelter and privacy. Each building is oriented to frame a different view to the hills, to the south, east and west, creating a space for retreat and connection to nature.

Albacore Park & Museum

Architect // WINTER HOLBEN Architecture + Design

Description

The Portsmouth Submarine Memorial Association engaged the WINTER HOLBEN design team to develop a vision for the architecture of the Albacore Park & Museum, home to a National Landmark historic research submarine. The collaborative team developed an architectural vision anchored in five purposes: Inspire, Learn, Gather, Honor and Support; with a goal to expand the visitor experience and ensure the preservation and legacy of the historic vessel. The schematic design envisions an inspiring new structure, welcoming to all. The museum’s glazed façade enables sweeping views of the submarine from the interior and captures natural daylighting while the modular and multi-purpose building extends capacity for exhibits and education, events and administration. Maritime-inspired features include a wave-like roof structure with solar panels and building form that exposes its own technology (submarine-style). Outside the museum, the design expands the visitor experience with planned space for outdoor exhibits, memorial and gathering spaces.
